Born on February 19, 1949, in Evergreen Park, Illinois, Dr. McShane’s academic journey began at St. Louis University where she graduated magna cum laude with an A.B. in 1971. She earned her M.D. from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1977. Her postdoctoral training included an internship and residency at Boston Hospital for Women, followed by a Clinical Fellowship at Harvard Medical School, where she specialized in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

In 1983, Dr. McShane became one of the earliest reproductive specialists to embrace and advance the then-nascent field of IVF in the U.S. As Medical Director of the IVF program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and later at the Reproductive Science Center of New England, she played a pivotal role in the introduction of embryo cryopreservation, oocyte donation, and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Her leadership continued with advancements such as pre-implantation genetic diagnosis and screening and early trials of oocyte maturation.

Dr. McShane’s tenure at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center from 2007 to 2013 was marked by her revolutionary work on oocyte vitrification. She fronted clinical trials demonstrating the efficacy of vitrified oocytes, establishing them as a viable alternative to fresh oocytes for infertile couples. Her commitment to education and advocacy for fertility preservation led her to develop CME materials to improve oncologists’ acceptance of these vital options.
