How we are unique
- All of our sperm is purified through a gradient column, unlike other providers that merely centrifuge raw semen (including leukocytes, bacteria and debris that may be present with the sperm). Centrifuging raw semen, without a gradient column, results in the production of reactive oxygen species which may modify the sperm membrane and impair fertilization (RJ Aitkin et al. 1987, 1992, 1994). The World Egg and Sperm Bank uses a gradient column which provides a gentler way of preparation that protects the sperm from damaging oxygen-free radicals by not centrifuging everything together into a dirty pellet.
- We also use a new generation cryopreservation medium that has been shown to:
- Maintain semen function and DNA integrity with the help of antioxidants and key amino acids
- Maintains a stable environment due to its dual buffer system
- The World Egg and Sperm Bank provides much less expensive ICSI vials with lower, but plentiful numbers of sperm for ICSI. Currently, when a patient has needed donor sperm for ICSI (when very low quantities of sperm are necessary), they have had to spend significantly more money to purchase an IVF or IUI vial – and then most of the remaining sperm was discarded.
