Budgeting for a Sperm Donor: How Much Does A Sperm Donor Cost?

September 18, 2024
A woman sitting at her desk crunching numbers representing how much does a sperm donor cost.

While we’ve touched on this topic in the past, we find importance in revisiting topics like this from time to time. Especially when new information presents itself. So, in today’s blog, we’ll be taking another dive into the waters of sperm donation. Specifically focusing on what the budget looks like for this process. As well as answering questions like, “How much does a sperm donor cost?”

What is Sperm Donation?

Let’s start with a little refresher about the sperm donation process. When we think about it from an out-of-context perspective, it can be an interesting process to imagine. Someone is going to a specialized room of a medical facility, where they are directed to, how should we say, do the deed. While this may be the simplest way of explaining this process, there is quite a bit more that goes into it.

The Different Methods of Sperm Donation

Typically, there are two methods to donate sperm. The most common method is sort of what we explained above. After a potential donor applies and gets accepted, we have them go through our medical screening process. This process consists of medical, physical, and mental screening after which the donor goes on to provide a test sample. This ample then gets examined by our andrologists to assess quality, motility, concentration, and morphology. If everything looks good from there and they pass our quarantine phase, they then get added to our donor roster where they can regularly start donating. The second less common method is sperm donation through medical extraction. For more information on this process click HERE!

So, How Much Does a Sperm Donor Cost?

To give a general quote is tough due to certain factors that can dictate the cost. Cost is mainly dictated by the type of procedure you may need.

Below are the common ways donor sperm can be used:

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a process where a woman’s eggs and a man’s sperm are combined in a laboratory dish to facilitate fertilization outside the body. Once the fertilized egg, or embryo, is created, it is transferred to the woman’s uterus to establish a pregnancy. IVF is commonly used to address various causes of infertility, for both men and women. The use of medications and procedures to stimulate egg and sperm production, as well as genetic testing of embryos, are all part of the IVF process.

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a form of artificial insemination where prepared sperm is directly placed into a woman’s uterus to facilitate fertilization. This procedure is often combined with medications to enhance fertility. Open fallopian tubes are a prerequisite for IUI to be successful.

This option does not involve egg retrieval from the recipient. Sperm is placed into the uterus during ovulation using a thin tube. It is the quickest and most cost-effective method.

Intracervical Insemination (ICI)

Intracervical insemination involves the insertion of sperm into the cervix, alongside monitoring of the ovulation cycle and, in some cases, additional medications to induce ovulation.

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

In cases where traditional IVF procedures are unsuccessful or when there are issues with sperm penetration, intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) may be used. This involves the direct injection of a single sperm into an egg to aid fertilization.

ICSI has a high success rate in fertilizing eggs, and once fertilization occurs, the chances of a successful pregnancy are similar to those with traditional IVF.

The reason we didn’t include the pricing for these procedures is that every gamete bank and fertility clinic is different. They can have different parameters that dictate pricing, for instance. There are fertility clinics that provide gamete as well as the procedures themselves while others, like The World Egg and Sperm Bank, only provide gamete services thus requiring future parents to partner with both. While we may not be able to go into general estimates, we can talk about our sperm pricing!

Options, Pricing and Guarantees | Sperm Donors

Our sperm purification process is unique and sets us apart from other providers. Unlike most providers, we utilize a gradient column, not just a centrifuge, to ensure that our sperm is free from impurities like leukocytes, bacteria, and debris. This method protects the sperm from reactive oxygen species, which could harm the sperm membrane and affect fertilization. Additionally, we use a state-of-the-art cryopreservation medium that has been proven to maintain semen function and DNA integrity. Our ICSI vials are not only cost-effective but also provide sufficient sperm for the procedure, eliminating the need for patients to purchase excess sperm that goes to waste.

  • PURE™ IVF Sperm (≥5 million TMC): $650 per vial
  • PURE™ IUI Sperm (≥10 million TMC): $1199 per vial
  • PURE™ ICSI Sperm (≥1 million TMC): $290 per vial
  • The Perfect Union: 20% off Sperm when purchasing a cohort of our donor eggs.
  • H.I.P.™ – Home Insemination Program: Doctors recommend using: 1 – 2 vials of our PURE™ IUI Sperm (≥10 million TMC) priced at $1199 per vial.
  • U.S. Shipping is a standard rate of $500
