Have you ever thought about becoming a sperm donor, but were unsure what the process even looks like, and left wondering, “how does a sperm bank work?” Those looking to become sperm donors will go through a series of screenings which include evaluation of their physical and mental health as well as providing a sample to be tested to ensure it meets quality standards. Once the screenings and testing have been completed successfully, the sperm donor can begin making regular donations.
Read on to learn more about how a sperm bank works and what the process is for you to become a sperm donor with The World Egg and Sperm Bank!
How Does a Sperm Bank Work?
So, in general, how does a sperm bank work? At The World Egg and Sperm Bank, sperm is collected from approved donors, who meet global standards for testing, and then frozen through a process called sperm cryopreservation. The sperm is then quarantined, and the donor will complete a final FDA test to ensure the donated sperm is cleared to sell to the intended parent(s). It is then stored for future use, which can be thawed and used in procedures involving recipients such as embryo creation and IVF.
Recipients will first browse through hundreds of our donor profiles beforehand and choose the donor they’d like based on various characteristics of the donor profiles. These profiles include pictures and a general bio of each sperm donor. This gives recipients a glimpse into what preferable traits their intended child may have, whether it’s hair color, skin color, eye color, or other physical characteristics. It can also help create a more personal connection to their chosen donor. Seeing what hobbies, interests, and passions they have that make them who they are.
But, how does a sperm bank work? Not just in terms of the sperm itself or the recipients, but for you as the donor? Carry on reading to learn about the sperm donor process with a sperm bank from application to donation!
What is the Process to Donate Sperm at a Sperm Bank?
1. Apply to Donate.
Let’s start with the first step, applying! Aspiring sperm donors will first fill out our convenient and easy online application form on our website, to see if you meet the general qualifications to donate sperm. This application takes around 10 minutes to complete and will ask general questions about your health and your aspirations to donate.
2. Meet with Our Team!
After you’ve been approved in our application, you’ll visit our state-of-the-art facility located in Scottsdale Arizona, to meet with one of our team members and provide a test sample.
3. Provide a Test Sample.
Sperm donors are required to provide an initial test sample before they can begin regularly donating. This will allow our sperm bank team to test your sperm sample and ensure it is up to the standard of health and quality.
When evaluating a sperm sample, our team will look at various qualities to determine its viability, including:
- Sperm count: Amount of sperm in your sample.
- Sperm motility: The sperms ability to swim towards the egg.
- Sperm morphology: The shape and size of your sperm.
- Vitality: The percent of live sperm in your sample.
4. Go Through Health Screening
Informally called your level 2’s, our team will go over with you in-depth, the entire sperm bank process, and what your next steps will look like. You will then go through the further, necessary health screening and testing. These will include:
- First and secondary blood draws.
- Urine sample.
- General physical exam by our MD.
- Genetic counseling- You will meet with our certified genetic counselor to review the results of your genetic blood draw.
- Psychological screening- You will meet with our certified, friendly psychologist, to inform and evaluate your understanding and willingness to donate.
5. Start Regularly Donating!
Now you’ve made it! As a certified sperm donor, you would now be ready to donate 1-3 times per week at your discretion for the remainder of your sperm donor journey.
