April 18th marks the beginning of National Infertility Awareness Week. A week dedicated to amplifying the voices of infertility warriors and committed to infertility education. The goal of this week is to remind people that infertility does not discriminate. Currently there are 7.3 million Americans battling infertility of all genders, sexualities, races, religions, and economic statuses. That comes out to 1 in every 8 people, which is why is important to know what can put people at a higher risk for infertility and how egg donors can help.
- Age. By 40 a woman’s chance of getting pregnant declines from 90% to 67%. By 45 this number takes a steep dive down to 15%. Along with the struggle to get pregnant at this age there is also a greater chance of miscarriages.
- Emotional and Mental Health. Depression, stress, and anxiety can contribute to infertility in both men and woman. This is due to the fact that these emotional factors can affect the hormones the regulate reproduction.
- Environmental Risks. Prolonged exposure to things like high temperatures, chemicals, and radiation can impact fertility in men and woman.
- Unprotected Sex. Engaging in sexual relations with multiple partners without condoms can result in STDs in both men and woman. STDs have been shown to cause infertility in both sexes.
- Substance Abuse. Drug and alcohol abuse has detrimental effects on one’s overall health, as well as fertility. Smoking and drinking have been shown to increase the risk of infertility in men and woman.
Anyone can struggle to have a family and taking the appropriate measures to prevent infertility does not always ensure success, which is why people need donors. Egg donation is one way for infertile couples and/or members of the LGBTQ+ community to build a family of their own. Egg donation is also a great way for donors to learn more about their own fertility.
Egg donors are required to go through an extensive genetic, medical, and psychological screening before retrieval. While this testing is intended to ensure that this donor will be successful in cycling, all reports are available to the donor as well. This means the donor will be able to see data on their own fertility for their own reference. Egg donors are also compensated up to $24,000 for their time, making the experience beneficial in more ways than one.
Infertility does not discriminate and neither does The World Egg and Sperm Bank. Our goal is to make dreams come true, for both our recipients and donors. We understand that donor eggs are not usually someone’s first choice, but rather something they turn to after all other options have been exhausted. For recipients, egg donors are the missing piece of their puzzle. For donors, donation is an opportunity to change lives. To begin your journey to egg donation visit theworldeggandspermbank.com.
